I just confirmed this with Debbie's attorney, Ray Jeffrey, who tells me he really can't say anything else about the terms of the settlement

"The matter is settled. That's the full extent of it," he says.

Pretty lame.

I never expected Miscavige to agree to appear in court under any circumstances.

Oh well. Once again, it's time to follow the money.

She's a Scientologist. She has her limits. And she certainly deserves to get her life back. She put a dent in them, that's good. Others will do more.

Bittersweet. That was "the tip of the iceberg" ... and there I was waiting for the rest of it.

So she "has reached a legal settlement with the church, her lawyer confirmed today." I'm going to go ahead and interpret that as meaning that she backed down, gave in, accepted a cash payout, and is now free to continue following Hubbard's nonsense like the brainwashed fool she is.

Even though her former actions in the cult taint her as quite evil, I will agree that she's entitled to have her life back. And others in the legal community and in the press are entitled to dig further into all this, and do what they think is right.

To say the least, my hope is that this story will not go away.

Buck up, she may have a buddy from the old days in the Hole ready to go to bat. I can hope, right?

Apparently to TBT, the agreement says "The agreement dated Monday allows both sides to essentially call it even and go their separate ways. Neither pays the other side money, and Cook and her husband are legally prohibited from ever again speaking ill of the church."

Not unexpected, but she did seem to fold kind of easy.

It's a generic, obvious response, but one I never get tired of, so for the record, 'WHAT KIND OF 'RELIGION' NEEDS THE COURTS TO STOP PEOPLE CRITICISING IT!'

One that has been granted tax-free status by the IRS, and uses their money to.....oh wait, wut?

Maybe Christian churches will start suing people for making their own interpretations of parts of the bible? No, but I think the silencing of the clients of CoS is very telling -- this is a business, and since they don't allow clients or former clients to speak or act freely about anything regarding its activities, it would be a business and a cult as well.

Church of Scientology drops Bexar suit against ex-member
By Craig Kapitan
Updated 10:31 p.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012

A breach-of-contract suit in which the Church of Scientology used Bexar County courts to target a high-ranking former member quietly ended this week with a settlement.

The case was dropped Monday, according to court records.

Debbie Cook, who received $50,000 as part of a nondisclosure agreement when she left the Florida-based organization in 2007, violated that agreement with a mass email on New Year's Eve that disparaged church practices, the lawsuit contended.

But the suit became almost a textbook example of how litigation can sometimes backfire after Cook was called to the witness stand for a pre-trial injunction hearing in February and, with a courtroom full of reporters, outlined under oath a history of alleged oddities and abuses by the church.

The allegations included seven weeks of captivity in “The Hole,” where Cook said she slept on the floor, was fed “slop,” was coerced into giving false confessions and was beaten, according to previous Express-News reports. She was also forced to stand in a garbage can for 12 hours as water was poured over her head and watched as another man was ordered to lick a bathroom floor clean, she said during four hours of testimony.

I like that the reporter framed this as a move by COS that backfired. That's true, even though we may wish she'd taken it further. They did take a hit.

Church of Scientology, Former Church Official Settle Lawsuits out of Court
BY DAN HARRIS and MARY MARSH
http://abcnews.go.com/US/page/csi-abc-statement-debbie-cook-15818173

The Church of Scientology and a former high-ranking church official have settled their disputing lawsuits out of court.

Debbie Cook, who ran the Scientology church’s spiritual mecca, the so-called Flag Base in Clearwater, Fla., for 17 years, said in an email to “Nightline,” “I can only confirm that we did settle and otherwise make no comment.”

Court documents show the settlement terms were filed on Monday and say that the church will drop its demand for damages against Cook and her husband Wayne Baumgarten. One provision in the settlement said Cook and Baumgarten are permanently and forever enjoined from “printing, posting, disseminating, circulating, quoting publicly, uttering or publishing any kind of statement in any form which is critical of, defamatory or disparaging against any of the Church Parties, either directly or indirectly.”

No money was involved in the settlement.

I didn't even hear about it.
I was cataloging a dozen more M&M DA sites, and thought "Shoot! They must have done one for Debbie Cook!" Sure enough, the domain was created February 1st. (If it ever had content, it was probably just a clone of all the other sites with a single paragraph on Debbie Cook followed by the anti-Marty spew.)
